German countryside
I chose this photo next because I liked the combination of the upper crenelations with the three rectangular aspects of the structure. The lower half round shape contrasts nicely with squareness of the building sections. I think I took the photo for this structure while we were on a boat cruise down the Rhine. The spring tour season had just started the weekend before and we were virtually the only passengers on board. As I recall, it was quite cool and breezy and I was glad I had my coat. I guess April can be cool there, just like here.
This may be part of the railway system as an entrance to a tunnel. Once again my failure to take adequate notes notes comes back to haunt me, but I do remember someone telling me these elaborate structures were part of the tunnel system. I think I remember that because it was so surprising such elaborate structures would be built for a train tunnel. If anyone has any other ideas, I’d be glad to hear them.
I am going to use some of the coral color here. The area around the entrance was red and I think I will make some of the stone corners red too. We’ll see after I use the water wash.

I love the castles, too. that was my favorite part of the trip – visiting the castles. They aren’t much like what we see in the movies. It was interesting to experience the scale of them. Rooms felt and must have lived much smaller than we had been taught to believe. And cold too, at least in the spring. I was glad we had brought coats.

As you can see here (http://eisenbahntunnel-portal.de/lb/inhalt/tunnelportale/3507.html) quite a number of railway-tunnels were constructed in keeping with the surrounding buildings in order to not disturb the atmospheric landscape. So you might have indeed have drawn a tunnel entrance.

Thanks! At least my memory isn’t totally gone. LOL It is an interesting structure, in any case and does resemble the care taken for some in your reference. Maybe I’ll have to rethink my color scheme.

Me too. There is a rock wall above the structure. I haven’t quite figured out what to do for that.

Yes. It is from a trip to Germany in the spring of 2000 when we went to raise a timber frame house for John’s company. It is a railway tunnel entrance with a rock face above. I haven’t quite decided how I will indicate that with the washes.
